Born in Mar del Plata, Argentina, Silvia Zehn grew up in New York City where she was exposed to jazz early on and began to play the piano at age eight. Her older brother introduced her to the music of Thelonious Monk where there was always music playing in their home.
Silvia’s devoted fans say, “Her compelling improvisations brings you into her creative flow.” For twelve years, she entertained guests at New York City’s Hotel Giraffe. Silvia’s crisp, yet emotionally resonant, interpretations of beloved American jazz standards, bossa novas, and Latin repertoire have delighted audiences across the United States and throughout Europe.
As a professional linguist for thirty-five years, she directed her own successful business, Interspeak Translations, Inc., an in-demand translations agency in Manhattan. Working as a simultaneous interpreter, Silvia found the same in-the-moment improvisation with words as she finds when she improvises jazz repertoire. “When people ask me how many languages I speak, I always say music is just one of my languages. Music, especially jazz, allows me to exchange ideas and communicate with other musicians and express myself in the moment. And, of course, having an audience completes the conversation.”
Silvia’s unique style is always memorable, and she brings an intimate elegance to jazz venues, hotels, restaurants, and private gatherings. She often appears as a duo or trio with other talented performers including bass, vocalist, guitar, and saxophone.
